CITY MEAT MARKET OWNER GERALD BIRKELBACH DIES

  

The owner and pit boss at a long-standing meat market and restaurant in Giddings has died.

Gerald Birkelbach, owner of City Meat Market, died unexpectedly Thursday morning at the age of 65.

Birkelbach worked at City Meat Market for 41 years.  The market has been featured in outlets like Texas Monthly and CNN, and has received multiple best barbecue awards.

In a statement, City Meat Market said Birkelbach was “a legend that many people knew and many wanted to see,” and was “genuinely a hard worker and a good person.”

Funeral services are pending with Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.

    With his son Justin . It saddens me to hear of this man and his family’s loss , Brook and just I’m so sorry for your loss , I liked you dad a lot just to come in the CITY MEAT MARKET, to get my bbq and on many occasions I saw you and your dad making the best bbq I’ve had in my whole life , I love his genuine personality,his piecfull voice and always had a smile on his face made everyone feel like at home with family , again I’m very sorry for your family’s loss , he will be missed dearly by all who knew him , R.I.P GERALD my buddy and dear friend till we meet again
