FEMA WARNS OF PHONE SCAM OFFERING HOTEL STAYS
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is cautioning the public of a scam offering assistance to Texans affected by the winter storm.
FEMA says a phone number of 800-745-0243 is being circulated on social media, along with a message saying FEMA is paying for hotel rooms for people who need power and a place to stay warm.
The message asks residents to provide personal information such as their address, social security number, income and insurance information.
FEMA says this is a scam, and that the best information on legitimate sources of help will come from local officials and the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
