Blinn volleyball picks up fifth straight sweep

BEEVILLE, Texas — The No. 13 Blinn College volleyball team came up with a pair of sweeps over Ranger College and Coastal Bend College Friday on the road.
The Buccaneers defeated Ranger, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-21), then took down Costal Bend in a conference game, 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-6).
With the win, the Buccaneers improved their overall record to 12-0 and conference record to 5-0.
“There were times we played really good today and times where we gave up some runs, but overall we had a good day on the court,” head coach Terry Gamble said. “I thought Chard’e Vanzandt and Lixai Perez Velez played really good. I am really proud of the team for playing five matches in five days and winning them all.”

Blinn 3 – Ranger 0
The Buccaneers opened the day with a sweep over Ranger, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-21).
Jayde Shelton led the match with 15 kills, two blocks, and three block assists, while Vanzandt and Ashley Taylor each had eight kills and Essence Clerkley had seven. Taylor led the match with a .583 hitting percentage.
Loren Scott led with 30 assists and three aces, while Brooke Borden followed with two aces. Perez Velez led the Buccaneers with eight digs, and Emily Smajstrla and Kyndal Coufal each had five.
The Buccaneers opened the match on the right foot with a 25-18 win. They extended their lead in the match to 2-0 by defeating the Lady Rangers by 14 points (25-11) in the second set. The third set was the closest between the two teams, but the Buccaneers managed to pull away for a 25-21 victory and the sweep.

Blinn 3 – Coastal Bend 0
Blinn defeated Coastal Bend, 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-6), for a conference win and the Buccaneers’ fifth straight sweep.
Shelton posted a team-high 14 kills, while Clerkley followed with eight kills and a team-high .667 hitting percentage. Scott led with 31 assists and three aces, while Tatum Smidovec led with 13 digs and Kyndal Coufal followed with 12. Clerkley and Taylor each had five block assists, and Shelton came up with four.
The Buccaneers came up with a 25-11 win to kick off the match. Coastal Bend fought back in the second set, but Blinn was able to hold the Cougars off, 26-24. The Buccaneers played a dominant third set to take down Coastal Bend, 25-6, for the sweep.
Next, Blinn will return to the Kruse Center on Monday, March 8, at 6 p.m. to take on No. 8 Navarro College in a conference match.
