TxDOT DESIGNATES PREFERRED HIGHWAY 290-36 INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENT PLAN

TxDOT has announced which of the Highway 290-36 interchange improvement plans it will pursue.

Revised Concept B would place new lanes for Highway 290 just south of the current interchange. This concept achieved the highest score on the TxDOT matrix.

Based on TxDOT’s technical evaluation and input from local stakeholders and the public, the agency has determined that the “Revised Concept B – Central Direct Connect” plan is the preferred interchange concept that will guide further development.  The plan would put new lanes for Highway 290 just south of the current interchange.

Updates to Revised Concept B after detailed engineering design and analysis will be presented in subsequent public meetings.

The decision aligns with the recommendations made by the Brenham City Council and Washington County Commissioners, who also stated they favored Revised Concept B at recent meetings.

The goal of the project is to improve safety, reduce congestion and improve regional mobility along the Highway 290 corridor.  TxDOT says the project will provide continuous traffic flow on Highway 290, maintain two lanes in each direction and maintain access to local roads.

The TxDOT Bryan District held a virtual public meeting from November 19th to December 4th to present five interchange concepts and obtain public input.

Construction at the cloverleaf is expected to begin in 2026.
