WASHINGTON CO. EXTENSION AGENT TALKS HISTORY, CURRENT STATE OF AGRICULTURE DURING NATIONAL AG WEEK

While Washington County is often looked to as a tourism destination and an area of historical prominence, it also plays an important part of Texas’ agriculture industry.

As this week is National Agriculture Week, KWHI visited with Washington County AgriLife Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Kara Matheney to discuss the roots of the industry in the county and where it is headed.

Matheney says Washington County has a very rich and steep history in agriculture.

Matheney considers the county’s top three historical commodities to be cotton, dairy, and beef cattle.  Nowadays, agriculture in the county primarily revolves around beef cattle and forages, with small pockets of row crop production.

Matheney says while agriculture is alive and well locally, there are some impacts yet to be seen from Winter Storm Uri.

Matheney says the networking and resources provided by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service help farmers and ranchers identify best management practices, improve production opportunities, and work toward providing options for sustainability.
