No. 9 Blinn places fifth at the UHV Claud Jacobs Invite

VICTORIA, Texas — The No. 9 Blinn College women’s golf team placed fifth at the University of Houston-Victoria Claud Jacobs Invitational at The Club at Colony Creek Monday.
“I thought that the women’s golf team improved their short games and distance control with their approach shots this week,” head coach David Johnson said. “Alexis Graham shot her low-round as a Buccaneer with an 85 in the final round, which was good. Coach Katie Johnston and I look forward to watching the women’s team in playoffs.”
Blinn posted team scores of 352 and 346 for a two-round total of 698. Texas Wesleyan University won the tournament with a two-round total of 617.
Cheyenne Sowda led the Buccaneers with scores of 87 and 81 for 19th place. Madilynn Goad tied for 23rd with scores of 82 and 90, while Alexis Graham tied for 30th with scores of 94 and 85.
“We practiced a lot during the week on our short game, which helped me out when the time came,” Sowda said. “I finished the first day with an 87 and the second day I came back with an 81. Coach Johnson helped my putting improve for this tournament to secure the scores I posted.”
In addition, Leyah Wilson shot a two-round total of 182 for 32nd place, Katelyn Foster shot a two-round total of 186 for 34th place, and Brill Wise, who played as an individual, shot a two-round total of 193 for 35th place.
Next, the Blinn women’s golf team will compete in the second half of regional play at a tournament in mid-April (to be announced). The Buccaneers finished the first half of regional play at the Centenary/ Hal Sutton Invitational and sit in second place behind Tyler Junior College.
No. 12 Blinn men’s golf finishes fifth at UHV Claud Jacobs Invite
Travis Edwards places fifth individually to lead Blinn
VICTORIA, Texas — The No. 12 Blinn College men’s golf teams finished in fifth and ninth place out of 10 teams at the University of Houston-Victoria Claud Jacobs Invitational at the Victoria Country Club on Monday.
“We played fairly well in the first two rounds considering we had two long lightning delays and it rained most of the day,” head coach David Johnson said. “Today we didn’t have the multiple sub 75 scores in the final round and that cost us a spot. We struggled with every part of the game today, but that is golf though.”
The Blinn Blue team placed fifth after recording team scores of 301, 300, and 307 for a three-round total of 908. The Blinn White team finished in ninth after recording team scores of 313, 308, and 328 for a three-round total of 949. UHV won the tournament with a three-round total of 876.
“We will get back to work and head into the playoffs in April with a lot of energy,” Johnson said.”
Travis Edwards led the Blinn Blue team with a fifth-place finish after shooting rounds of 74, 70, and 74. Justin Dees shot rounds of 77, 3-over-par 75, and 78 to tie for 20th place, while John Baker tied for 24th place with a pair of 77s and a 78 .
In addition, Cameron Gray and Kannin Mikulik tied for 32nd with three-round totals of 235.
“We have spent a lot of time practicing and preparing with Coach Johnson for this tournament and I played well in it,” Edwards said. “I finished the first day in second place after shooting an even par and fought through the final day to place fifth overall.”
Hayden Roup led the Blinn White team with a 2-over-par 74 and a pair of 78s to tie for 2oth. Bryce Honeck tied for 26th place with rounds of 79, 1-over-par 73, and 81.
In addition, Morgan Hubbard tied for 32nd with a three-round total of 235, Jack Looney tied for 54th with a three-round total of 253, and Michael Strout tied for 57th with a three-round total of 258.
Next, the Blinn men’s golf team will compete in the NJCAA Southwest Championship in Lubbock on April 11-13.
