DEADLINE THURSDAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN MAY ELECTIONS

The deadline for voters to sign up to vote in May’s elections is quickly approaching.

Voters have until Thursday to register for the City of Brenham, Brenham ISD and Burton ISD elections on May 1st, if they are not already registered.

Early voting will take place April 19-23 and April 26th and 27th at the Washington County Courthouse Annex for the Brenham City Council and Brenham School Board elections, and the Burton ISD Administration Office for the Burton School Board election.

Washington County Clerk Beth Rothermel says the last day to submit an application for ballot by mail is April 20th, but she encourages anyone looking to vote by mail to request an application as soon as possible in order to leave enough time to return it in person or by mail.

Voters can request a ballot-by-mail application by calling the Washington County Courthouse at 979-277-6200, or they can download one at www.co.washington.tx.us.  Voters can return their applications in-person until the start of early voting on April 19th; after that, state law requires applications to be mailed in.

Three of the four positions up for election on the Brenham City Council will be contested races.  The Ward 1 seat of incumbent Keith Herring is being challenged by Shannan Canales, while Allan Colvin is challenging incumbent Clint Kolby for At-Large Position 5.  Leah Cook and Albert Buchanan will face off for the At-Large Position 6 seat of Susan Cantey, who is not seeking re-election.  Atwood Kenjura is uncontested for the Ward 3 position of Andrew Ebel, who is also not running for another term.

For the Brenham School Board, there will be two contested races.  Trustee and Board Vice President Melvin Ehlert will look to defend his seat against Christine Giese and Jared Krenek, while Michelle Walbeck is challenging Tommie Sullivan for his trustee position.  Trustee and Board President Natalie Lange does not have an opponent.

Three candidates are vying for two at-large trustee positions on the Burton School Board, those being incumbent David Warner, Sr., Boris Jumper, Sr., and Brian Hinze.
