BUCCANEERS WOMEN’S GOLF PLACES SECOND IN REGION XIV
JACKSONVILLE, Texas — The 15th-ranked Blinn College women’s golf team finished second in Region XIV at the Cherokee Ranch Golf Club on Friday.
Today’s tournament was cancelled due to weather after five holes, so the Region XIV Championship was determined by the team scores just from the Centenary/Hal Sutton Invitational played March 21-23.
“The ladies had a great spring, and in our first full competitive season, I thought we played well,” head coach David Johnson said “I want to think my assistant coach Katie Johnston for working with all the players, especially on the women’s team. Our success would not have happened without her.”
Sixth-ranked Tyler Junior College won the Region XIV Championship with a two-round score of 635, while Blinn finished second in the region with a two-r0und team score of 709.
“I am super proud of how the girls have handled themselves this year,” Johnston said. “They never stopped trying to improve and work on things they needed to work on. It has been exciting watching them grow.”
Madeline Goad became the first Buccaneer in women’s golf history to earn a spot on the all-region tournament with a fifth-place finish. Only five players are named to the all-region team each season.
“I am so honored to get to play with such an awesome group of girls that constantly motivate me and push me,” Goad said. “I wish I could say I was able to be a part of the all-region team just out of pure talent, but I have had such an amazing support system that has only grown since coming to Blinn.”
Goad led the Buccaneers this season with three top-20 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at the Pinecrest Country Club on March 7-9 to open the season.
“I am super proud of Madeline for her great accomplishment,” Johnson said. “She and Coach Johnston work hard on improving her game daily.”
