The Regional Vaccination subHUB at the Washington County Expo has provided its final COVID-19 shot.

The subHUB closed on Wednesday following a drop in demand and an increase in vaccine availability at clinics and pharmacies.  Through about 17 weeks of vaccinations, the subHUB administered roughly 62,000 shots after opening in mid-January.

Washington County EMS Director Kevin Deramus said subHUB officials initially were unsure of what the response would be, but it quickly grew apparent how much of a demand the subHUB was serving.

The subHUB drew residents from all over the state of Texas, including cities like El Paso, Laredo and Crockett.  Deramus believes it was positive word of mouth that led to this, and said it served as affirmation for subHUB operators that they were making a difference.

Deramus feels that the teamwork and collaboration of the community in running and supporting the subHUB was key in its success.

Moving forward, the vaccine doses that would have been distributed to the subHUB will be reallocated to local pharmacies.  Deramus said the EMS office will hold onto a few hundred vaccines for people who are having difficulty getting vaccinated.  He said officials will stay prepared to restart the subHUB pending any decisions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccinations for children and “booster shots.”

Deramus thanked all community partners, volunteers, elected officials, and everyone who was involved with the subHUB’s creation and operation.
