TEXAS DEMOCRATS WALK OUT ON ELECTION BILL

Texas Democrats posed a dramatic, walkout in the state House of Representatives Sunday night to block passage of election bill, leaving Republicans with no choice but to abandon a midnight deadline and declare the legislative session essentially over.

The revolt is one of Democrats’ biggest protests to date against GOP efforts to impose stricter election laws, and urging President Joe Biden to act on voting rights.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who had declared new voting laws a priority, quickly announced he would order a special session to finish the job. He called the failure of the bill “deeply disappointing” but did not say when he would drag lawmakers back to Austin.

  1. We had a fair election. Numerous recounts have proven this to be true. Problem is, the losers didn’t like the results, so they would prefer to throw out the baby with the bath water. Fair voting is a hallmark of democracy. Suppressive voting restrictions are straight out of the Putin playbook, and SB7 is just that.

    1. After Virginia ruled their voting law changes regarding mail-in voting deadlines was illegal, the election can no longer be said to have been “free and fair.”

We’ve never had 24-hour voting, and it isn’t needed. A 6 am-9 pm voting frame as proposed covers all shifts. It’s also illegal for businesses to deny a person time off to vote.

No drive thru voting either: all covid voting was drive up. Same processing applied.

We don’t need mail-in ballots everywhere.

In honestly, I feel the democrat party erred here.

The one thing I can safely say is people both sides of the aisle do NOT like it when a party forces an unnecessary special session.

Abbott has to call one, amc did more than this.

The last time this occurred, democrats lost 10-20 seats in state legislature and Abbott won 2:1 margins to Wendy Davis, nearly 3:1.

    2. Unfortunately the recounting was not done in all disputes. There are still several contested areas that used the voting machines that were not fair and the Democrats know it. Was that enough to change results? Maybe not, it was a close election in any event. There is nothing in the purposed bill that is bad or unfair for the integrity and process of voting. Quite the opposite. That is why Democrats do not want even let the vote happen. It is sad, but most people understand that.
      Putin playbook? That is laughable.

  2. Cheating. This is about preventing cheating in elections. They are against preventing cheating in elections. That means they SUPPORT cheating in elections. The ID thing is just a silly deflection argument, we all know you can’t do much of anything anymore without a valid ID. This is all about cheating.

  3. Right on, Democrats! Fair elections are what keeps this country great! EVERY CITIZEN has the constitutional right to vote. We need to make it easier for us, NOT harder.

    1. No one is “trying” to make voting harder. Requiring an ID does not not make it harder to vote. Being a registered voter by the deadline, does not make it harder to vote. Every state need election reform. Every person is given ample time, as well as many options on voting. These measures should be there to ensure the election is fair, no matter what party . If the people that walked out don’t understand that it shows that they are ok with possible fraud.

  4. This bill is clearly aimed at limiting the minority vote. Look at the data for Tarrant and Harris countries. Over the past 20 years, voters are younger and more liberal and independent. There is no voter fraud, just a younger generation moving away from conservatism. Republicans need to stop the false narrative of fraud and reach out to those that don’t align with our priorities. My Republican brother voted drive thru (required ID) and loved it. Why stop it?

  5. Abbott should have not dismissed the session. Make them sit there til hell freezes over instead letting the go home for a holiday weekend…..
