BRENHAM MAN KILLED IN THREE-VEHICLE CRASH NEAR ELLINGER

A Brenham man was killed in a three-vehicle accident Sunday evening in Fayette County.

DPS reports the accident occurred just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 71 and FM 955, less than 2 miles west of Ellinger.

According to DPS, a 2019 Chevy Colorado pickup driven by 85-year-old Wilfred "Peanut" Gaskamp of Brenham was turning onto FM 955 from Highway 71.  DPS says the Chevy failed to yield right of way to a westbound 2005 Jeep Liberty, which struck the pickup on the passenger side and sent it into a side skid.  The truck, according to DPS, then struck a 2018 Toyota Highlander before coming to rest in the westbound bar ditch.

The Jeep spun around and traveled back across both westbound lanes before stopping in the center median.  The Toyota also spun around, coming to rest in the bar ditch.

Gaskamp was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the Jeep, 25-year-old Richard Keeton of Fayetteville, was transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center with critical injuries.

Three occupants of the Toyota, including 30-year-old Noah Matocha of Fayetteville, 30-year-old Lauren Matocha of Fayetteville, and a one-year-old boy, were treated and released with minor injuries.

Assisting DPS at the scene were the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMS and the Fayette Volunteer Fire Department.
