BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO CONSIDER CALLING BOND ELECTION, DISCUSS BUDGET

The Burton School Board will consider the possibility of calling a bond election this November at its regular meeting Monday.

Members of the Burton School Board meet Monday, May 10th. The meeting was broadcast via Zoom.

For months, trustees have discussed the need for upgraded facilities across the district.  Some of the improvements that could be considered as part of a bond proposal include additional classrooms, science lab improvements, and upgrades to the band hall and cafeteria.

Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy has previously stated that academic facilities are being prioritized, but athletic facilities could also be considered.

Burton ISD last presented a bond proposal to voters in November 2016.  Voters rejected the $18 million bond issue with 556 votes against and 389 votes in favor.

Trustees will also review preliminary budget projections and consider approval of a potential staff salary increase and revised leave day policy.

Also at Monday's meeting, the board will consider:

  • A contract with Reliance Architecture, LLC.
  • Bond strategic planning services.
  • Approving a PreK - Kindergarten restroom building project.
  • Region VI, Education Service Center contracts.
  • A dyslexia plan.
  • A 2020-21 application for low attendance days waiver.
  • A 2021-22 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) grant application.
  • Action on surplus funds of the Washington County Appraisal District.
  • An agreement designating Washington County Extension Agents as adjunct staff members.
  • Staff reports from the superintendent, athletic director and principals.

The board will hold a facilities workshop at 5 p.m. prior to its regular meeting at 6 p.m.  Both meetings will be held in the Burton ISD Administration Office.  The regular meeting will be open to in-person attendance, but the public can also participate via Zoom or phone call using the information listed below.
