WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH IN-PERSON, VIRTUALLY

The birthplace of Texas is celebrating Juneteenth this week.

Rachel Flinn, Assistant Site Manager for the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, says this year’s celebration will incorporate both in-person and online elements.

Leading up to the on-site event on Saturday, there will be several video presentations on the history of African American families in Washington County.  The videos, presented by members of the Willie Lee Gay H-Town Chapter of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), will be uploaded each day to the Washington-on-the-Brazos Facebook page and the Texas Historical Commission’s YouTube channel.

On Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the AAHGS will host a virtual genealogical workshop to present research methods and conduct a live Q&A session for beginner researchers.  The webinar will be uploaded to Washington-on-the-Brazos’ social media channels for those unable to attend.  Click here to pre-register for the workshop.

The historic site will celebrate Juneteenth in-person from noon to 4 p.m. with performances, exhibitions, vendors and presentations on African American culture and history in Texas.  Live music will start at noon with the Fantasy Band, followed by the Mt. Rose Men’s Chorus and the Brown Sugar Band.

Entry fees to the historic site will be waived on Saturday.

The event is presented by Brenham National Bank, the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation and the Texas Historical Commission.
