WASHINGTON COUNTY SENIORS HONORED OVER WEEKEND

This past weekend, hundreds of Washington County Seniors were honored by the Thomye Delle Celebrate Our Seniors Program.  This year, because of continuing COVID-19 concerns, community and church volunteers loaded up their cars, trucks, and vans with care packages to deliver to three local nursing homes (High Hope Care Center, Argent Court Assisted Living Center, and Brenham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center) and to hundreds of senior citizen homes all over Washington County.

The care packages included hand sanitizer, snacks, socks, body wash, powder, lotion, hand cream, Q-tips, blankets, playing cards, writing pads, ink pens, gift cards, and facial masks.  In addition, each package also included a personal, hand-made greeting card from the youth of Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.

According to program co-founder and organizer Veronica Ferguson-Maxie, none of this would have been possible without the outpouring of support from local companies, churches, organizations, and private individuals.   “This year was particularly special because it marked the first year that we brought the senior celebration directly to the front porch of each senior.  Given so much isolation over the last 18 months, many seniors appreciated someone simply checking up on them,” said Tre Maxie, co-founder.

Next year, the Celebrate Our Seniors program hopes to return to its traditional format of an in-person program with free BBQ lunches for seniors, live gospel music, bingo games, appreciation awards, healthcare information, door prizes, and most important, fellowship with one another.

Anyone interested in supporting the program with financial or product donations should contact Veronica Ferguson-Maxie through the Celebrate Our Seniors program at (979) 830-5555, or email address celebrateourseniorsday04@gmail.com
