TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO BEGIN THIRD SPECIAL SESSION SEPTEMBER 20
Texas legislators will return to Austin for a third special session later this month.
Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday announced five agenda items for the special session, which will begin on Monday, September 20th at 10 a.m.
During the session, lawmakers will focus on legislative redistricting, vaccine mandates, transgender student-athletes, American Rescue Plan Act appropriations and animal cruelty.
Legislators will discuss whether state or local governmental entities can mandate that individuals get vaccinated for COVID-19, and what exemptions should apply if mandates are allowed.
Representatives will also take up a bill similar to Senate Bill 29 as passed by the Senate in the 87th Legislature. The bill disallows students from competing in University Interscholastic League (UIL) athletic competitions designated for the sex opposite of the student’s sex at birth.
A bill vetoed by the governor during the 87th Legislature will be reconsidered during the special session, that being Senate Bill 474, which pertained to the unlawful restraint of dogs outside.
Abbott said other subjects may be submitted for consideration after the session convenes.
