IN-CUSTODY DEATH UNDER INVESTIGATION IN GIDDINGS

An investigation is underway into an in-custody death in Giddings.

According to a release from new Giddings Police Chief Bill Weems, police were called out just after 11:15 p.m. Monday night for a report of a suspicious person at North Madison and East Boundary Streets.

Police say they arrived to find a man who had climbed into a tree.  After police talked him into coming down from the tree, they say he became combative with officers.

Police restrained the man and called for EMS to evaluate him.  They say he remained combative while EMS was on scene.

The man, identified as 30-year-old Eseciel Flores of Giddings, was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.  Authorities have not provided information on the nature of Flores’ death.

Weems said the Texas Rangers are now investigating the death, and that two Giddings police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, per normal procedure following in-custody death incidents.
