KWHI SPORTS DIRECTOR ED POTHUL PASSES AWAY

The longtime sports director of KWHI and the voice of sports in Washington County has died.

Ed Pothul

Ed Pothul passed away unexpectedly overnight.  He was 60 years old.

Pothul had been recovering at home following a recent bypass surgery, after he suffered a heart attack in September.

Pothul, known on air as “The Sports Doc”, began working for KWHI on September 6, 1989, coming to Brenham after broadcasting games for his alma mater, Eastern New Mexico University.  A native of Sheffield, Massachusetts, his broadcasting career began at age 15 in his hometown.

In his many years with KWHI, Pothul provided play-by-play coverage for numerous local sporting events, including football, baseball, volleyball, basketball and Little League.  He was enshrined into the Brenham Cub Football Hall of Honor in 2015.

Funeral arrangements for Ed Pothul are pending at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

  1. I grew up in Massachusetts with Ed, I remember him in 5th grade going thru the sports pages of our local newspaper and reading the Red Sox box scores a sports announcer. I never did hear him on the radio but I can picture and hear exactly what he sounded like. RIP my old friend.

    1. If you’d like to hear him, go to the menu and select Information, then Audio Archives. I think the last game he announced was on 9/10.

  2. Hard to believe we will not hear his voice again. How many people he touched! Washington county lost a true treasure.

  3. I remember when I first came to Brenham as a sports reporter for the Banner-Press in 2010. I was new in town and felt in over my head. I met Sports Doc at a Burton football game and he introduced himself in his kind, gentle manner that made a young kid out of college feel at ease. In the years that followed, he always went out of his way to tell me he enjoyed a story I wrote or to shoot the bull about his Red Sox or my Rangers. It was an honor working next to Doc in the time I did. Rest In Peace, good sir.

  4. Ed’s love for sports led him all the way to our little corner of Texas, and I’m sure glad it did! Ed’s knowledge of sports, pleasant voice, and easy going spirit will be impossible to replace. Ed, I’m so grateful that you came to Brenham some 32 years ago. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Thanks again for blessing us with your talents.

  5. Such a big loss… Ed was a kind, humble person, and a great friend and college.
KWHI/KTEX family, I’m thinking about you in this time of loss. Ed was so young….
Ed loved his work, and he will not be forgotten by your listeners, his friends, and colleagues.
My deepest condolences to the family ?.
    Rest In Peace Ed.

  6. Such a tremendous loss ?! Ed was a great friend, colleague, and he took pride in doing what he enjoyed the most – being a Sports Doc legend.
    Rest In Peace Ed.

  7. Our community has been blessed to have Ed as our voice for all these years. Ed took his job seriously and did it so well that it will be hard for anyone to fill his shoes. Very few communities our size are so well represented. Our triumphs were sweeter, our losses easier to bear with Ed narrating them. He’s gone, but he’ll never be forgotten.

  8. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He was always friendly and saying hi to my mentally challenged sister whom dearly loved him. She always had a big smile on her face when she saw him. I always wanted to thank him for his kindness to her and she will be saddened to hear of his passing. God bless him and his family.

  10. KWHI SPORTS will never be the same. Still remember the first time I met him @ a Cub game. He not only lived his job, he loved his job and that kept him happy always. He loved
All the games as well as all the players.
Doc was special in so many ways !

  13. Ed. I’ll miss our back & forth jawing about our favorite baseball teams, the Red Sox (you) & the Orioles.
You enthusiastically supported all of the kids playing all of the sports in the county. You gave of yourself. You loved the kids & wanted to honor them. Thanks for supporting kids; for your humor & your friendship. Rest in peace, brother.

  14. Rest In Peace Sports Doc! Love you man! Your dedication to this community and its youth will not be forgotten!

  15. Hawaiian Shirt Friday should stay as a Tribute to Ed. It was his idea! R.I.P. my Friend! Baseball and Football games will, never be the same.

  16. “Doc” and I made a lasting connection over love for athletics, and especially because both of us were displaced YANKEES! What a good man who loved young people and all sports. His dedication and commitment to our kids in Washington County cannot be adequately measured! (I can only guess at the number of miles he traveled to support our kids. “Doc”, you will be greatly missed. No one can replace the “Sport’s Doc”!!!

  19. I remember in the 90’s hearing Ed in conversation with some mutual friends and it was clear that his first mission was help the kids reach their potential.
He could have easily continued to climb the ladder of success and may have even ended up on national media with the skills he had.
    He is irreplaceable.

  20. Man going to miss hearing your voice. Was a blessing meeting you in high school! Who didn’t want to chat live with The Ports Doc. We kept a friendship that day forward. You will loved an missed, but not forgot Doc. Love ya man!

  21. What a good man he was. Heartbroken over this news, but thankful for his life. He loved Brenham and the people of the town so well. When I think of Brenham athletics and games played, I hear his voice on the call. Thankful to have known him and will never forget our conversations.

  22. I’m relatively new to the area (just 9 years), but I work driving a car around the Brazos Valley all day, much of which I spend listening to KTEX 106 or KWHI. Ed Pothul’s cheery voice has been such a staple in every day life in Brenham. He will be very missed. I know his family and friends will miss him even more dearly. I hope they can find the slightest condolence in how much he was loved in this community.
