TWO ARRESTED FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON
An altercation between two parties lead to two Brenham men being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak reports that on Sunday, at 5:30 pm, Deputies responded to a weapons involved altercation on Tommelson Creek Road. Deputies identified the parties at the location and determined that 51 year old Brenham resident Charles Douglas McCurley and 45 year old Brenham resident Bainham Cade Skidmore had traveled to the location to discuss personal property issues of a McCurley’s family member. Neither McCurley nor Skidmore were owners or renters of the property where this altercation took place. According to witnesses on the property, a physical fight ensued between McCurley and Skidmore and two witnesses on the site with a handgun allegedly being displayed in a threatening manner.
Both McCurley and Skidmore departed the scene and were later arrested at McCurley’s residence on Confederate Lane. Both were charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and bonds for each were set at $100,000. Both men remain in the Washington County Jail. No further information is available and the investigation will continue.

Make sure to add this info into any firearms debate…..Mexico has a total ban(cant own, cant possess) on assault rifles, handguns, and high capacity magazines and yet it has the highest number of murder by firearm cases on the planet for around 14 straight years, and it isnt even close. So there is proof right next door that stricter laws dont necessarily mean less violence….if someone is to the point of killing, they will use whatever is available
Statistics collected by various gun violence organizations and independent research groups show that Venezuela and Brazil are the two leaders in homicides from firearms in the world. Most of that is associated with drug cartels and the plethora of military weapons that have been lost, stolen, and imported into the country by those groups. El Salvador has the highest per capita death rate by guns. As far as gun ownership in Mexico, while it is heavily regulated, individuals CAN own handguns, as long as they are .38/9mm and smaller (excluding the 357 Magnum); you can also own a shotgun as long as the barrel is 25″ or longer and it is no larger than 12 gauge. Military style/ ‘assault weapons’ in calibers 5.56mm, 7 mm, 7.62 mm, and 30 caliber are prohibited, but sporting arms/calibers are allowed. Granted, there is heavy regulation, but studies done in the last 20 years show that the majority of guns collected in homicides were originally sold in the United States and illegally transported into Mexico, and many were from our own state. If you recall, there was a gun dealer from the Dallas area who was arrested and tried for sending over 100 weapons to Mexico several years ago. Certainly, one wouldn’t believe that the only gun store in the country, which is in Mexico City, wouldn’t be able to check the records of its sales when a gun was used in a homicide. The two individuals in this story are just hotheads who had quick access to guns, and that is an ever-increasing occurrence in society. Instead of removing guns from persons who have never had any legal issues, the legal and judicial system need to maximize charges and punish to the fullest extent of the law.
The USA has always been the most violent country on the planet but can’t admit it. This is why we have more citizens in jail/ prison per capita in the world . Shame on us and the elected officials of both parties
More and more we hear and read of more frequent violence involving guns in the counties of the Brazos valley. On a weekly basis, with as much as 3 to four incidents per week. I think back to reading of history in the Wild West of yesteryears, and these same incidents happen with the same frequency. A subscription to newspapers.com will provide those facts. What is astounding, is that in 200 plus years, we have not changed a great deal in this respect. Has our evolution come to a halt?
The fact is that guns are plentiful and there is no effective way to prevent most adults from accessing one. Laws are in place to prevent convicted felons from having them, but no law enforcement agency could ever monitor all concerned. The “constitutional carry” law that went into effect September 1 has a provision for those who are forbidden by law to be sentenced for up to 5 years if caught with a firearm, but the provision is not being used to any degree. Our governor says that he knows people “[…] will do the right thing […]”, but if that was true, every law enforcement officer would be unnecessary. Charges must be brought for every illegal use of a firearm and if convicted, a substantial sentence needs to be imposed.
Think back 40 years or more, and drive thru the high school or Blinn campus and there was at least one rifle or shotgun in mist of the trucks parked there. There were no mass school shootings. People were taught to use a gun properly and if you acted in any way dangerous with it, you got your butt whipped not only at school but then again at home. Parents took responsibility for their actions as well as their kid’s. Kids weren’t babied.
You didn’t talk back to the teacher or the principal and you knew your parents were on the teachers side regardless. So let’s go ahead and blame guns again and not the real issue here! People do not care anymore and don’t get disciplined when they should.
Right on ! Preach it loud & proud.
No. You are incorrect.
Criminal types will ALWAYS use guns, and not follow the law.
It is our job make sure that everyone else who is not a criminal, can have access to a firearm, for self defense, or hunting, if and when they want to.
Truth, that is All.
If you and ‘Parent’ are responding to my comment that anyone who uses a gun in an illegal act or after having been prevented by law from possessing one be punished to the fullest extent of the law, (and you say I am incorrect), where am I incorrect? Is there anything in my post that said guns should be taken away? No. Is there anything in my post that said guns should be more regulated? No. I merely stated that guns are plentiful (and that both criminals as well as law abiding citizens can easily access them). The fact remains that many charges for weapons that could be brought are often not, and the prosecution will use greater charges against the accused than stacking up every charge that is possible to ensure that person will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
