This year’s program, held at the Fireman’s Training Center in Brenham, recognized all veterans and, in observance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, all first responders.

The featured speaker for the event was Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin, who recounted his personal experiences with military officials and talked about what visiting the war memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C. meant to him.

Dr. Chaplin recalled a time when he asked the general of Sheppard Air Force Base near Burkburnett, where he previously served as school district superintendent, about the noise from the fighter jets at the base.

Dr. Chaplin said generosity and selflessness are two words that come to mind when describing veterans.

Several local dignitaries also spoke, thanking the men and women of the military for their service.  They included State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, City of Brenham Interim City Manager Carolyn Miller, and a representative on behalf of U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul.

Local veterans and auxiliary members who have passed were recognized with the ringing of the bell, and the ceremony concluded with the playing of “Taps”.

After the program, a lunch of barbecue beef and pork was served, with proceeds going to Washington County veterans groups.
