The Fortnightly Club of Brenham has hit a milestone.
On Wednesday, the club celebrated its 125th anniversary. Members of the club gathered at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library for a ceremony to mark the occasion, as well as the 120th anniversary of the club’s founding of the library.
Fourteen charter members established the Fortnightly Literary Club of Brenham on December 8, 1895. Brenham’s first library was formed on February 19, 1901 in two rooms in the building behind Giddings & Giddings Bank at the corner of Alamo and Park Streets.
Fortnightly Club President Lu Hollander says the members of the club are devoted to the library and its success, and that is a major reason for the club’s longevity.

While the club no longer operates the library, it still acts as a major financial supporter, purchasing items not included in the library’s budget.
The club’s annual Used Book Sale returns in February to the Washington County Expo, after not being held this year. Due to a large amount of book donations, the sale will be held over a week from February 21-26, rather than the usual four days.
