2021 RECAP: BRENHAM ISD SUPT. DR. TYLOR CHAPLIN

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin speaks at the Leaders in Education Forum August 4th at Blinn College in Brenham.

With 2022 quickly approaching, KWHI is meeting with officials around Washington County to review the events of 2021 while taking a glimpse into the new year.

We continue with Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin, who recapped this past year for the school district and discussed its plans for the coming year.

Dr. Chaplin said continuing to keep schools’ doors open throughout the year in spite of COVID-19 was a great accomplishment.  He also lauded the return of many extracurricular events and the success enjoyed by students.

On the opposite end, complications brought forth by the pandemic and Winter Storm Uri were major struggles this year.  The district also had to navigate a leadership change at the high school principal position, and continues to look into ways to work through the teacher shortage.

Dr. Chaplin said another challenge this year was trying to avoid recreating the past to move into a changed future.

Dr. Chaplin said keeping an eye on what is most important for the students and avoiding getting caught up in politics will be a key to success in 2022.  A bond planning committee comprised of various community members has been meeting throughout the year, and will provide a recommendation soon on whether a bond is necessary for district and facility upgrades.

Dr. Chaplin is excited about the potential of a new agreement between the district and Brazos Valley Teach, which will allow students to take Dual Credit courses along an education pathway.  He is also eager about a new partnership with Blinn College to provide expanded academic, financial, and career and technical education opportunities.

Dr. Chaplin became Brenham ISD superintendent in September 2020, succeeding Dr. Walter Jackson, who had served in the role since 2015.  Prior to coming to Brenham, Dr. Chaplin was the superintendent of Burkburnett ISD.
