CITY COUNCIL AND P AND Z HOLD WORKSHOP TO REVIEW PLAN

Brenham Development Services Director Stephanie Doland reviews the proposed plan for those in attendance Monday.

The Brenham City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission held a joint workshop session this (Monday) morning to review the proposed Thoroughfare Plan for the City.  Brenham Development Services Director Stephanie Doland reviewed the plan and commented that it was several years in the working.  The last Thoroughfare Plan was passed by the City Council in 2014.  The proposed plan was put on hold in March of 2020 due to COVID.  It was also delayed waiting for TxDOT’s decision on the Highway 290 cloverleaf.

The plan is a comprehensive wish list of the city staff that will be looked at for the next 20 years.  While most of the Arterial streets in Brenham are controlled by TxDOT, the city plans several connections to them.  The major TxDOT project in the plan is the Highway 290 cloverleaf intersection which is scheduled to begin the 2026 and be completed by 2029.  The plan identifies several street projects that the City of Brenham plans to complete in the next several years.  The plan also identifies several areas of existing city streets that have problems.  They include Academy Street and Highway 105 intersection, the Day Street and Business 36 intersection, the Market Street Corridor through Downtown, and the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Park Street.

Brenham Fire Chief Roger Williams and Public Works Director Dane Rau look at a map of the proposed plan before the meeting.

Doland reminded viewers of the plan that proposed roads are subject to change and if the line goes directly through your property, it doesn’t mean that the road will end up there.  She also said that many of the roads will include sidewalks and bike lanes.  The proposed plan is scheduled for a public hearing on January 24th before the Planning and Zoning Commission, and then scheduled to go before City Council in February.  You can see the proposed plan here.

  1. City also needs to look at East Stone from South Day to South Market. It is in bad shape and is traveled a lot.
