A local farmer is running for Washington County Commissioner of Precinct 2.

Mark Schonefeld, owner and operator of Schonefeld Farms in Chappell Hill, is challenging incumbent Candice Bullock in the March 1st Republican primary.

Schonefeld says he wants to make a difference in the community and make it a better place for everyone.

A native of Riviera in South Texas, Schonefeld graduated in 1992 from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural systems management.  He began farming in Washington County in 1997 and started cattle production in 2006.  He also served as president of the Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department for eight years.

Schonefeld says keeping the public informed and having enough law enforcement to protect it are high priorities.

The final day to register to vote in the primary election is January 31st.  Early voting starts February 14th.
