MACY HOLSTER WINS WASHINGTON COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Macy Holster won the 2022 Washington County Spelling Bee last (Tuesday) night.  She correctly spelled the words petrifying and haphazard in the 15th and 16th rounds to win.  Second place finisher Will Hefferly tripped up on the word affectionately in the 15th round.  This year the winner did not have to spell the missed word, only two new words.  Both Macy and Will are students at Alton Elementary School.  Third place finisher Corbin Brooks tripped up on the word emperor in the 6th round.

Macy is the daughter of Sean and Mindy Holster.  Will is the son of Andy and Abby Hefferly and Corbin is the son of William and Carol Brooks.  Macy will now advance to Houston Public Media Spelling Bee in March.  KWHI has been a sponsor of the spelling bee since its inception in 1955, and has provided cash prizes to the top three spellers at the event each year.  A video of the entire Spelling Bee can be viewed on KWHI's Facebook page.

The three spelling champions are (L to R) 1st Place Macy Holster, 2nd Place Will Hefferly, and 3rd Place Corbin Brooks.

  1. I am very proud of my grandchild and all the other children that competed! But there were problems from the get go and only got worse as it went along: 1 the guy pronouncing the words, mispronounced more than he said correctly, 2 most of the words used in the first round was not on their spelling list (we check, they weren’t on my grandchild list) 3 the gentleman doing the call, acted as if he was mad though out the spelling bee, 4 he was very condescending to the kids as they got the words wrong, only 5 or 6 kids got out of the first round out of 23.

I hope other parents will comment
