As the Brenham Heritage Museum moves closer to the Phase 1 opening of its historic Post Office Building late this summer, it has begun revealing the design team’s renderings for the first permanent exhibits.

The first release of images relates to the military service exhibit that will span two large areas near the Market Street entrance to the museum.  The displays will be twin, multi-dimensional walls that rise around 10 feet in height and connect visitors in various ways to the stories of the servicemen and servicewomen of Washington County.

The museum, working with Core Design Studio of Houston, will use representative artifacts, a touchscreen that lists the Washington County fallen, audio clips, oversized images and video to honor local members of the military.  The museum’s permanent collection contains many pieces with local history tied to 20th century military service, and a few dozen of those will be included.  Artifacts will include dimensional cabinetry and acrylic vitrines containing items such as uniforms, caps, helmets, letters, guns, maps, medals, pins, canteens and gas masks.

Brenham Heritage Museum Executive Director Mike Vance said the museum wants to share personalized stories of service and sacrifice, and is “taking care to make sure the stories cover all time periods, different branches of the military, and that they are inclusive on the basis of race and gender.”

Phase 1 exhibits will primarily be located on the building’s main floor, though some artifacts will be placed in the basement.  Exhibit elements for future phases will follow.

The museum will release more artwork and descriptions of the initial exhibits over the coming weeks.
