BURTON CITY COUNCIL – POSTPONED

Update -  12:10 PM Wednesday - Due to unforeseen circumstances. Today’s Burton city Council meeting is postponed.  The data of the reschedule is unknown at this time.

Original Story - The appointment of a new mayor will be taken up by the Burton City Council at its meeting this (Wednesday) afternoon.

The council will consider appointing Pete Horn, a businessman and member of Burton’s beautification committee, to replace David Zajicek, who stepped down from office effective Tuesday.

In addition, councilmembers will look to hire former city secretary Angela Harrington to serve again in the position.  The role had been held by Adrian Cepeda since January 12, 2021.  Another hire to be considered tonight is for a part-time clerical assistant.

In other action, the council will debate whether to adjust operating hours at Burton City Hall.  The proposed change would close city hall on Monday, meaning it would be open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The council will also consider accepting the city secretary’s certification of unopposed candidates and cancelling the May 7th general election.

Other items on tonight's agenda include:

  • Conveying undeveloped property at the end of East Branch Street and the road formerly known as South Colorado Street to American Kinetics, Inc. (AMKIN).
  • A mobile home variance for parcel #R27343 located on South Brazos Street.
  • Setting a budget hearing for the 2022-23 city budgets for April 12th at 5:30 p.m.
  • Authorizing the city to enter into an agreement with the state to close a segment of the state highway system in downtown Burton for the annual Cotton Gin Festival set for April 23rd.
  • Appointing a committee member from Burton for the Washington County Appraisal District Budget Committee for 2022-23.
  • Opening a new bank savings account to be named the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (CLFRF) Account.

The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
