Beginning this weekend, the historic homes in Independence will once again be open for public viewing.

The Independence Historical Society will conduct free tours of the historic homes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday through April 9th.  The homes have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Society members will lead tours through the John P. Coles house built in 1820.  Coles was one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” settlers, and the house is furnished from that time period.

Children will be able to play school in the Old Gay Hill school house, while visitors to the dog trot Log Cabin will see a loom and other era implements.  There will be a blacksmith in action, stitchers on the porch and live dulcimer music.
