NO CHARGES FILED AGAINST GIDDINGS POLICE OFFICERS FOR SUSPECT’S DEATH

A Lee County Grand Jury has determined that no criminal charges will be filed against Giddings Police Officers after a suspect died in their custody.

The incident originally occurred on September 20, 2021. Giddings Police were dispatched around 11:15pm to the intersection of North Madison Street and East Boundary Street.

The initial report said they were looking for a suspicious person, later identified as 30-year-old Eseciel Flores of Giddings, that had climbed a tree and started yelling obscenities.

Officers said that Flores was acting erratically and being uncooperative.  He was taken into custody with help from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas DPS.

After refusing to cooperate with the Lee County EMS, they transported Flores to the St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange for medical clearance and evaluation.

When they arrived at the medical facility, Flores was found to be non-responsive in the back of a Giddings patrol vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Two Giddings Police Officers were placed on administrative leave because of Flores dying while in custody.

Texas Ranger Conde Benoist of Seguin investigated the incident and presented his findings to the Grand Jury.

After considering the evidence, the Grand Jury declined to indict the officers.
