CUBS BEAT COLLEGE STATION 10-1; LEAD SERIES 1-0

BRENHAM 10 COLLEGE STATION 1
What started out as a pitcher's duel last (Thursday) night, turned into a route as the Brenham Cubs beat the College Station Cougars 10-1.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when College Station pitcher Blake Binderup hit a solo home run over the left field fence. That would turn out to be the Cougars only run of the game.
The Cubs would tie the game in the top of the fifth inning. Jacob Mabie got the inning started with a long fly ball to right field that was dropped by Cougar rightfielder Major Coronado. Coronado then had trouble picking the ball up, which allowed Mabie to get all the way to third base. Colin Schaper came in to courtesy run, and scored on an RBI single by Ethan Jezierski to tie the game 1-1.
Brenham then busted the game wide open with seven runs in the sixth inning. Hayden Hupe got it started with a solo home run. Rylan Wooten singled and Jacob Mabie walked. Lane Sparks singled home Wooten. Schaper, who ran again for Mabie, scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason Lampe. Jezierski then hit a monster two run homer to make it 6-1 Cubs. Brenham wasn't done yet though. Devin Murithi got hit by a pitch, and then came around to score on a two run homer by Gunner Gee, the third homer of the inning, and the Cubs lead 8-1.
Brenham got two more runs in the seventh inning. Wooten singled, Mabie walked, and Sparks singled to load the bases. Lampe hit into a double play, but Wooten still came in to score. Schaper, who courtesy ran a third time for Mabie, then scored on an RBI double by Jezierski to make it 10-1 Cubs.
Cayden Shields got the start, and went the first 4 1/3 innings. Mason Lampe came on in relief to pitch 1 2/3 innings. Ian Wirtz came on to pitch the final inning, and retired the side, striking out Cougar DH Tyler Abdalla to end it.
The series resumes tonight (Friday) at 7pm at Fireman's Park. The pregame coverage begins at 6:30pm on KWHI 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com. If the Cubs win, the series is over and they are moving on to the Region Semifinal next against either Friendswood or Crosby. If College Station wins, then they will play one more winner-take-all game tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm in Mumford.
