FORMER CUB WHITLEY ON THE BALLOT FOR THE 2023 TEXAS SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Wilson Whitley

One of the most famous players in Brenham Cub Football history is on the ballot for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Former Brenham Cub Wilson Whitley is among the list of several notable names that are eligible for induction on the 2023 ballot.

There are 20 nominees on the main ballot and 12 nominees on the veterans’ ballot. A maximum of ten will be selected for induction by a committee of writers, broadcasters, and Hall of Fame board members.

Whitley was an All-State Defensive Lineman for the Brenham Cubs, and later went on to be a unanimous All-American for the University of Houston.

He led the Cougars to the Southwest Conference Championship in their first season as a member.

Wilson Whitley receives the 1976 Lombardi Award from President Gerald Ford and Bob Hope.

In 1976, Whitley won both the Lombardi Award for being the nation’s top lineman, and the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy for being college football’s top lineman.

Whitley was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1977, and went on to play with them for six seasons. He would finish his career playing one season with the Houston Oilers in 1983.

Whitley sadly passed away at age 37 from a heart attack in 1992.

His alma mater, Brenham High School, would posthumously induct Whitley into the inaugural Hall of Honor class in 1999.

Whitley would also later receive a posthumous induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
