UIL STANDING ON COMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS MET TUESDAY TO DISCUSS ISSUES
The UIL Standing Committee on Athletics met yesterday (Tuesday) to consider multiple issues.
The biggest topic of discussion was a proposal that freshmen student-athletes no longer be allowed to compete on varsity. That proposal was overwhelmingly voted down by the committee members.
Another topic of discussion was whether or not to add a shot clock to high school basketball games. While support for the proposal is growing, the committee decided not to take any action.
They also looked at moving soccer from being a Spring sport to being a Fall sport. The committee took no action, so, at least for now, soccer remains a Spring sport.
In addition to that, the committee is going to further study a proposal that (at least in 5A and 6A), that all baseball playoff series would be mandatory two out of three series. The teams could still do a one game series, but it have to be mutually agreed upon by both coaches. Currently, if one coach wants a two out three series, while the other wants a one game series, they flip a coin to decide.
Finally, at a future meeting, the committee is going to take a further look at the realignments in Class 5A Football. With the current split between Division I and Division II, several schools are jumping up to Division I in order to save on driving distance, and keep neighboring schools closer together.
