STAGE 1 DROUGHT WATCH ACTIVATED FOR LAKE SOMERVILLE

BRENHAM RESIDENTS ASKED TO REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION

Lake Somerville has been placed under a Stage 1 Drought Watch.

The Brazos River Authority (BRA) said in a letter Monday to the City of Brenham that due to drier-than-normal conditions in the Lake Somerville area, a Stage 1 Drought Watch condition has been activated.  This entails a voluntary five percent reduction of the water use that would have occurred in the absence of any drought contingency measures.

In a press release today (Thursday), the city said it is asking water customers to reduce their consumption as much as possible.  City Manager Carolyn Miller said, “We want to do our part in this, as a community and within our homes, to decrease water usage to support this effort.”

Per the city’s Stage 1 drought contingency plan, water customers are requested to voluntarily limit the irrigation of landscaped areas to certain days and times.

Residents whose street addresses end in an even number are asked to limit their irrigation to Sundays and Thursdays between midnight and 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight.  Customers who have addresses ending in an odd number are asked to only irrigate on Saturdays and Wednesdays from midnight to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight.

As of this morning, lake levels measured at 237.09 feet.  The lake is considered full at 238 feet.

  1. the oil companies just put the pumps back in out here on iron bridge rd all the way to the lake
they are pumping water from the lake over 3 to 4 miles to a big lake they built thenmbthe pump it on from there to the rigs to frack with

    1. I would rather them use the water in the lake from springs and rain than from a deep well underground. The State and/or Federal Government will be paid by whomever is drawing the water from the lake I would think.

    2. So are the oil company’s doing the fracking conserving water? I know in Oklahoma the fracking was so bad it was causing minor quakes , Oil company’s are greedy and shouldn’t be able to tape lakes streams ….just a thought

    3. Robert… you are correct. They did just start pumping again. It’s beyond me how this can be allowed during a draught by the Corp, which I am told has the authority to allow them to do so.
