ERCOT ISSUES ANOTHER CONSERVATION APPEAL FOR 2-9 P.M. WEDNESDAY

Texans are again being called upon to cut back on their energy usage as the state continues to bake in extreme heat.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a conservation appeal for today (Wednesday) between 2 and 9 p.m., asking residents and businesses to turn up their thermostats and hold off on using large appliances.

ERCOT does not expect any system-wide outages.

The state’s power grid operator says today’s conditions are likely to be very similar to Monday, when voluntary conservation helped reduce energy use by 500 megawatts.

ERCOT says its decision to ask for conservation comes during record-high electric demand, accompanied by lower-than-normal wind generation, forced outages in thermal generation exceeding what was expected, and reduced solar generation because of cloud cover in West Texas.

The total forecasted demand today is 78,451 megawatts.

  1. Those panels come w a 30 year warranty. They re not llke a battery or EV. But electronics are an in demand recyclable. Did you know it was BP that came up w the carbon credit gimmick? Like COVID, I have no doubt the green deal is yet another enrichment program for neoliberal parasites.

  2. The green deal is like the left over green wiener at the gas station nobody is going to buy it we need to demand elected politicians do their jobs for us the people. What do you do with old defective solar panels? They don’t last forever.

    1. I demand English language and Grammar classes for Us the People, two! I’ll take California’s problem (I saw that talking point article, too) of how to dispose of/recycle old solar panels over our propped-up-by-Abbott, profit by freezing people to death good ‘ol boy network any day.

  3. According to ERCOT, all of their capitol for the past 10 years has been invested into wind and solar. The most unreliable forms of power generation. Move away from wind and solar and build / update dependable nuclear and fuel burning power generation plants.

    1. I am all for nuclear power. It’s the best and cleanest form of power, generating so much power as well.. If only there weren’t propaganda against it.

    2. It is not ERCOT’s capital. The system is not top-down where government owns the means of production. In a capitalist society, nobody invests in nuclear because it is far too expensive. Show me new nuclear capacity and I’ll show you the government picking the winners and losers. What we need to ensure grid reliability is a market structure where periods of high demand result in both high spot wholesale prices for producers and the same high spot prices for consumers in real time or at least day-to-day. If those prices get high enough, consumers will pay attention and the reliability problem will resolve itself and high prices will be an incentive for more swing capacity. What ERCOT and the PUC just need to do is to help build a more free and transparent market. And they can do it if they want to. But I don’t think they want to.

  4. “ERCOT says its decision to ask for conservation comes during record-high electric demand, accompanied by lower-than-normal wind generation, forced outages in thermal generation exceeding what was expected, and reduced solar generation because of cloud cover in West Texas.”

This quote says everything that is wrong with the current trend in power generation. Green energy is not consistent enough to be considered base generation. Green energy is useful for peak generation, but not for base generation. Base generation needs to be consistent and reliable. How are we going to recharge electric vehicles when gas engines are banned if we currently have trouble generating enough power to just live?

  5. This is ridiculous, when are they going to ensure that the Texas electric grid is built out to handle the demand of our state. Guess what, it is HOT in Texas in the summer, that is not exactly a surprise. How many times is ERCOT going to fail, they have exactly one job and in my book they get an F. Our electric grid needs to be strong enough to handle the demand.

Imagine if the Biden bunch got their way and we were all driving electric cars, the electric grid would collapse and drag our way of life and our states economic strength with it.

  6. I’ve invested in solar power. I have 22 panels. It’s unfortunate that I sell it back to Bluebonnet Electric Coop for less than I buy it, as the rate structure is unequal. But even more unfortunate is that I get cut off during rolling blackouts, which means I can’t continue sending energy back to the grid.
