SCHULENBURG ISD SCHOOLS RESTRICTING CELL PHONE USAGE

Schools in Schulenburg ISD have new rules in place for the upcoming school year to curb the use of cell phones.

Students in grades 6-8 will be required to turn in their cell phones at the office each morning.

The previous cell phone policy stated that phones should not be visible during the school day.  However, school officials said students regularly violated the policy, leading to many discipline referrals.

Students who do not hand over their cell phones will receive in-school suspension.

Meanwhile, high school students will be able to keep their phones during the day, but they must turn them fully off during school hours.

Parents who need to contact their children will have to call the front office.  Concessions can be made on a case-by-case basis for medical issues.

  1. If you’re unable to call for help you have to be able to help yourself. Why don’t you let students conceal carry? yes, of course they will need to pass a test like anyone else with a carry license.. no they are not wild criminals

  2. With all these shooting going around with would u place this new rule that is not acceptable

  3. Good job SISD. Stick to it. I am sure you will have a lot of parents up there complaining and crying. Rules are rules. Hope more schools follow.

  4. Can’t wait to see how this plays out, be a lot of parents bickering about this!

  5. Terrible idea. What happens when there’s an emergency and not a single kid has their phone? Why not make your classes more engaging for students instead of taking away necessary items? The lack of control for kids not following the rules is completely on the staff.

    1. You have got to be kidding. They sneak their phones out regardless of how engaging the lesson is. They had rather be snap chatting on their phone. What happened when there was an emergency before cell phones?

      1. With the rise in school shootings, this policy is bad. Any policy that is a blanket policy with no exceptions usually fails. The simple solution is if a kid whips out the phone during class, the teacher takes the phone for the day. After 3 strikes then further discipline happens. One learns more from self restraint than simply taking something away.

    2. A cell phone is not a necessary item at school. And the lack of students not following rules starts with the parents. Like I said, parents will fuss because “little Johnny needs his phone”, no he doesn’t. The schools have phones in the office! Get over it!

    3. Wow, exact response you would expect from a student in today’s society and exactly the reason why our school systems are what they are today. More and more adults/parents (still act like kids themselves) ask why, instead of just making their kids follow the policies set before them.
