A Lee County woman that is accused of murder is back in the Lee County Jail in Giddings after spending the past year in a mental hospital.

42-year-old Jennifer Redden Kramer had been in the Vernon State Hospital in Vernon, Texas since July 2021 after it was determined that she was not competent enough to stand trial.

After a year of treatment, it has now been determined that she is competent enough to stand trial.

Authorities say Kramer confessed to the murder of her roommate, 32-year-old Christopher Michael Gonzales, in March 2021.

Kramer and Gonzales lived together at a residence on County Road 314.  Authorities say Kramer stabbed Gonzales multiple times in the chest, and then dumped his body in a ditch about ten miles away.

A passing motorist found the body of Gonzales and alerted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation was initially stalled, because no one knew who Gonzales was.  An autopsy determined he died from multiple stab wounds. They also sent his fingerprints into the National Database to help determine his identity.

Lee County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Vance Weltner, and Texas Ranger Brent Barina interviewed Kramer, and she reportedly confessed to the crime.

Kramer was later indicted by a grand jury.  However, at a subsequent mental health hearing, it was determined that she was a danger to herself and others.  At that time, Judge Reva Towslee Corbett signed an order having her committed to the mental health facility.

  1. That’s sad how the government treats the mentally ill. If someone has mental problems and commits a crime and doesn’t understand what they did, they are sent to a mental hospital to be given medication so that they can understand what they did was wrong. Then they are taking back to court and sentenced to life or death.
