Somerville ISD is in the market for a new superintendent after the resignation of Karla Sparks at last (Wednesday) night’s School Board meeting.
Sparks resigned from her position with no explanation given.
According to the agenda for the meeting that was posted on the Somerville ISD website, the Board of Trustees met in executive session to consult with legal counsel regarding a voluntary separation agreement with Sparks, the naming of an interim superintendent, and hiring a firm to conduct a superintendent search.
Somerville ISD Director of Curriculum, Dr. Kristi Thaemiltz, was named interim superintendent, and she will serve in that capacity until a replacement can be named.
Prior to being named as Somerville ISD Superintendent in February 2019, Sparks served the district as a high school principal, Director of Curriculum, and Interim Superintendent. Sparks was hired as superintendent after the previous officeholder, Charles Camarillo, resigned to take the superintendent’s job with Poteet ISD.
Board minutes that are posted on the Somerville ISD website show that back on February 8 of this year, the Board met in executive session to evaluate Sparks’ job performance. When they reconvened in open session, they unanimously approved a one and a half year contract extension that would have taken her through August 31, 2024.
At their July 28th meeting, a second performance evaluation of the Superintendent’s job was given in executive session. When the board reconvened in open session at that same meeting, they took no action.
Karla is an outstanding educator!! I was on the team to originally hire her! Would love her to apply in BCS as a principal.
