WASHINGTON CO. SEEKING GRANT FUNDING FOR FERAL HOG TRAPPING PROGRAM

Kara Matheney, Washington County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources, discusses the county's grant application for feral hog abatement during commissioners court on Tuesday.

Washington County is pursuing grant funding for a feral hog trapping program.

On Tuesday, Washington County Commissioners approved the submission of a grant application through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension – Wildlife Services division to support feral hog abatement activities in the county.

Kara Matheney, Washington County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources, said feral hogs are an issue many landowners have to deal with.

Matheney said $100,000 are available through the grant program for all Texas counties, with awards ranging from $5,000 to $20,000.  Washington County is requesting $15,530.

Matheney said the county’s grant application is not going toward bounties for hog ears, instead seeking funding for trap and camera systems to be loaned to property owners.

The grant can also go toward enhancing landowner outreach protocols, providing educational programming and events, and conducting damage and control assessments.

Matheney said no matching funds are needed from the county, but the grant is on a reimbursement basis, meaning that if the county is approved, it would need to have a line of funding for those expenses to run out of and come back in.  She expects to receive notification on if the county receives the grant in October.

  1. $100,000.00 of our tax dollars available for hog trapping when at no cost to the taxpayers our Dept. of Agriculture could approve the hog poison Kaput which is legal in Oklahoma and Louisiana. Then we landowners would gladly eradicate hogs at our own expense.

  2. Who would be receiving these awards and for what? What will trappers do to the hogs after being trapped??
