FUCHS HOLDS LAST MEETING AS WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONER

Joy Fuchs sits behind the commissioners' desk for a
final time on Tuesday. Fuchs did not seek re
election for another term as Precinct 4
Commissioner, after having served since 1999.

Today (Tuesday) marked the end of an era for Washington County and for Precinct 4 Commissioner Joy Fuchs.

The commissioners court’s meeting today was the last one Fuchs will attend as commissioner, after declining to run for re-election.  Fuchs first took office on January 1, 1999 and will be succeeded by Dustin Majewski, who will be sworn in to the position this weekend.

The courthouse chambers filled with applause after the end of today’s meeting, congratulating and thanking Fuchs for what will be 24 years of service as commissioner come Sunday.

Fuchs said it has “been an honor” and that she did her best to always put Washington County first.

Fuchs played a key role in building the office annex and event center at the Washington County Fairgrounds, now the Washington County Expo.  She also helped to greatly increase the number of paved roads in Precinct 4, improve salaries for county employees, and foster the county’s relationship with the City of Brenham and the City of Burton.  Also during her time as commissioner, the county took in E-911 dispatch services, started an Information Technology department, and created an office annex space for employees.

Fuchs said, “You don’t get into this job wanting to be loved by everybody, because you know you've got to do what’s right for the county.”

As for what comes next for Fuchs, she remains the president of the National Association of Regional Councils until June, and will be on the board after that as past president.  She will also be on the Brazos Valley Council of Governments board as an at-large member and on a Texas Historical Commission advisory board.  In addition, she plans to do substitute nursing for Burton ISD and spend more time with family.

Another long-standing county official was also recognized today: Sharon Stolz is retiring after 47 years with the county, including over 20 as county auditor.  Stolz was grateful to have had the opportunity to serve.

During Stolz’ time as county auditor, the county was able to receive certificates of achievement in financial reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for over 10 years.  Her position will be filled by Shawna Dyer.
