DEALER PAYMENTS OF SPECIAL/VEHICLE INVENTORY TAXES TO MOVE TO APPRAISAL DISTRICT TAX OFFICE

The new year will bring about a change in how dealers pay their special inventory and vehicle inventory taxes in Washington County.

On December 13th, Washington County Commissioners approved collection of the Special Inventory Tax/Vehicle Inventory Tax (SIT/VIT) to be transferred from the tax office at the courthouse to the consolidated tax office on Niebuhr Street, beginning with the 2023 tax collection year.

Information provided in a joint press release from the Washington County Appraisal District and Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office says dealers who sell vehicles, certain heavy equipment and/or mobile homes in Texas must pay property taxes on the sale price of the items sold.  The number of items sold and total sales dollars must be reported to the local appraisal district on a specific form created by the Comptroller’s Property Tax Assistance Division.

Chief Appraiser Dyann White says this change will give dealers a “one-stop” experience, as they will be able to report to the appraisal district and make payments at the same time.

The change will begin with the January 2023 reports and the monthly payments due in February.  Regular vehicle dealers are due by the 10th of each month, while heavy equipment dealers are due by the 20th of each month.
