The founder of a nonprofit to assist people with disabilities is pursuing a spot on the Brenham School Board.

Archer Archer, formerly Archer Hadley, will challenge Dr. Michael Altman for his seat on the school board.  Archer, who is 26, has cerebral palsy and uses a power wheelchair.  He is the creator of Archer’s Challenge, which has raised over $1 million for accessibility improvements and services in communities.

Archer says he wants to share his recent experiences in the public school system while also being a voice for students like him, ensuring they do not slip through the cracks.

Archer is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in political science.  He has policy making experience including an appointment by Governor Greg Abbott to the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities, a position working for former Congressman and Chairman of Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady, and former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.  He travels annually to Washington, D.C. to lobby and speak on healthcare and disability-related issues.

Since moving to Brenham two years ago, Archer has served on both of Brenham ISD’s bond planning committees and is a member and grant writer for Brenham Elks Lodge 979.  He has spoken to several local organizations like the Pilot and Anchor Clubs, Ladies Lions Club and the Republican Club.

Archer feels listening to and serving everyone while making sure all of Washington County is represented are crucial to being a school board trustee.

The race between Archer and Dr. Altman is one of two that are currently contested on the May 6th ballot.  The other is between Artis Edwards Sr. and Kyle Hafner, who are running for the seat held by outgoing trustee Susan Jenkins.  Incumbent Kelvin Raven does not have an opponent thus far, nor does Bonnie Brinkmeyer, who is seeking to fill the seat of former trustee Mark Schneider.

The last day to apply for a position on the ballot is next Friday, February 17th
