Funeral services were held this morning at Grace Lutheran Church for Mutscher, who passed away on February 26th at the age of 90.  He was laid to rest at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

Mutscher served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1961 to 1972, being elected as the Speaker of the House in 1969.

During Mutscher’s time in the House, the state increased financial support for higher education, mental health and other state social services.  Mutscher was a key figure in establishing the Brenham State School, now known as the Brenham State Supported Living Center, bringing jobs and careers to Brenham, and creating the Star of the Republic Museum at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park.

Mutscher would go on to serve as judge of Washington County from 1977 to 1990.

In September, Mutscher was named as a Brenham ISD distinguished alumnus.  He was known during his time at Blinn College as “Mr. Buccaneer”, and his efforts on behalf of the college extended to securing additional funding and growth and developing its alumni base and Hall of Honor.
