GIRLS BOWLING TEAM GOING BACK TO STATE; SPARKS ALSO ADVANCES

Both Brenham Boys and Girls Bowling teams competed this weekend in the Region VIII High School Bowling tournament at Copperfield Bowl in Cypress Texas, hoping to advance to the State Tournament in San Antonio.

Girls State Bowling Team (L-R) Erin Keller, Lainey Masterson,
Emmy Boyd,
Macie Coskey, Leah Hardy, and Kendal Gurka (Michael Groves)

The girls team, consisting of Emmy Boyd, Macie Coskey, Leah Hardy, Kendal Gurka, Erin Keller and Lainey Masterson finished 2nd in the Region behind Cy-Lakes and qualified for the State Tournament.  This is the second year in a row that Brenham's Girls's Bowling has qualified for the State.   Brenham was in a tight battle with Cy Ranch over the eight team Baker games for control of second place.  Brenham rolled an outstanding 168 in Game 5 and then defeated Cy Ranch in game 8 to secure 2nd place and cementing their trip to State.

Lane Sparks (Michael Groves)

The boys team bowled well, but did not do enough to qualify for State.  Senior Gunner Gee bowled a 200 in his first game to lead all Brenham bowlers.  The rest of the Brenham team are Seniors Lane Sparks, Senior RJ Ratcliff, Junior Joe Dubowik, Sophomores Grady Gee and Tyler Lindemann, and Freshman Thomas Loesch.

After the team competition there is another tournament of the individuals who qualified for the Region tournament.  Representing Brenham for the Boys were Lane Sparks and RJ Ratcliff and for the Girls it was Leah Hardy and Macie Coskey.  Lane Sparks average over 220 over five games to finish 3rd in the Region and qualify for State.  Lane was right on the cut line until Game 4 when he bowled a 258 including 8 strikes in a row.  He then bowled a 219 to punch his ticket to San Antonio.  For the girls, Macie Coskey has a high game of 186 and fell one position short of qualifying for State finishing 5th.  Macie, who came into the tournament with a 128 average, bowled a 768 over five games averaging 154.  Leah Hardy, came into the tournament with a 158 average and battled injuries the whole weekend.  She put on a gutsy performance and gritted her way to a top 10 finish at Regionals.

The Girls team and Lane will next compete at the State tournament in San Antonio at the end of March.
