BRENHAM HERITAGE MUSEUM STARTING FREE FIRST WEDNESDAY PROGRAM, OPENING JUNETEENTH EXHIBIT

As the Brenham Heritage Museum gets ready to celebrate Juneteenth, it is starting a new program to improve accessibility.

The museum is launching a Free First Wednesday program, providing free admission to view the museum from 10 a.m. to noon on the first Wednesday of each month.

Free First Wednesday starts on June 7th to coincide with the opening of the museum’s Juneteenth exhibit, “The Music, the Melody, the Message: Evolution of African American Music Featuring Artists from Washington County”.

The exhibition explores African American music’s evolution from Africa to Texas, onto the national stage and beyond.  It brings together photos, artifacts and articles to showcase the work of talented Black musicians with Brenham roots.  It also sheds light on Brenham’s concert venues throughout history that have featured famous Black performers.

Cheryl DaBera, a volunteer and member of the Brenham Heritage Museum’s African American Content Committee, said Juneteenth allows the community to “come together in celebration of Black artists and their creativity.” She said the exhibit “chronicles and honors the contributions of Black musicians today and across time.”

The exhibit, which will be on display through June and July, is available to members and visitors during regular museum hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.  Groups of 10 or more can contact the museum at 979-830-8445 to schedule specific times for tours.

A meet and greet with the museum’s new executive director, David Thomas, will be held on June 7th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
