UNEMPLOYMENT IN MAY UP FOR AREA

  

Unemployment across the area saw an increase in May, according to the latest statistics from the Texas Workforce Commission.

Washington County’s unemployment rate jumped from 3.7 percent in April to 4.2 percent in May. 

The county’s number of unemployed residents grew from 559 in April to 633 last month.

Meanwhile, overall employment numbers and the civilian labor force shrank.  Over the course of April to May, employment dropped from 14,749 to 14,527, while the labor force declined from 15,308 to 15,160.

In May 2022, Washington County’s jobless rate was 3.7 percent, and the number of residents without work was 564.

The state’s adjusted unemployment rate rose from 4 percent in April to 4.1 percent in May. 

May’s regional unemployment rates include:

  • Austin County – 3.8 percent, up from 3.4 percent in April.
  • Brazos County – 3.2 percent, up from 2.8 percent.
  • Burleson County – 3.6 percent, up from 3.3 percent.
  • Fayette County – 3.7 percent, up from 3.4 percent in April.
  • Grimes County – 4.7 percent, up from 4.1 percent.
  • Lee County – 3.6 percent, up from 3.3 percent.
  • Waller County – 4.5 percent, up from 4 percent.

  1. I wonder if those numbers are higher because of a mistake or scam in the area. Who else received a notice that they had filed for unemployment when they had not?

    1. I know of two individuals that received a notice that they had filed for unemployment when they had not.
