BURTON CITY COUNCIL PROPOSES TAX RATE MATCHING VOTER-APPROVAL RATE
The Burton City Council on Tuesday formally proposed a tax rate for adoption that is the highest rate allowed without needing voter consent to be adopted.
The proposed rate of $0.28979 per $100 valuation consists of $0.065182 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.224608 for interest and sinking (I&S).
Washington County Chief Appraiser Dyann White said the rate is identical to the voter-approval rate and is the maximum that can be implemented without having to proceed with an election for voters to approve the tax increase.
Last year, the council adopted a no-new-revenue rate of $0.32131 per $100. This year’s no-new-revenue rate is $0.274424.
A public hearing on the tax rate will take place on Tuesday, September 12th at 5:30 p.m.
At the end of the meeting, the council received a presentation from Susan Kiel of the Burton Chamber of Commerce and Steph Jarvis of the Burton Cotton Gin Museum. The two shared details on a pair of projects that are in the early stages with TxDOT: two “Welcome to Burton” signs along Highway 290 and separate wayfinding signage also on the highway that directs visitors to local attractions.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council:
- Approved the 2022-23 Fiscal Year audit as presented by Medack & Oltmann, LLP.
- Approved the purchase of no engine brake signs and TxDOT-required slip base post systems at a cost of $1,652. Two signs are for FM 390, with another for Spur 125 and another for FM 1697.
- Tabled a resolution to dissolve the Burton Beautification and Compliance Committee. The recommendation to dissolve the committee came after workshop discussion held on July 25th regarding the enforcement of documents pertaining to the committee and to the Laas-Weeren Park Rules and Commission. The item was tabled to allow more time to review proper Texas Municipal League (TML) procedures.
- Held discussion on city alleyways and a vision forward regarding future conveyances and easements.
