CALDWELL OFFICER CLEARED IN FATAL SHOOTING
A Caldwell Police Officer has been cleared in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy that occurred on June 17.
A Burleson County Grand Jury determined that there was no criminal wrongdoing on the part of Officer Coleman Decker.
On the evening of the incident, Decker and other officers were dispatched to a report of several vehicle burglaries.
Two suspects were located at the scene. Decker chased one of the suspects on foot and a physical struggle ensued.
According to Caldwell Police Chief Charles Barnes, the suspect shot Decker, and Decker returned fire fatally wounding him.
The suspect, who was later identified by KBTX-TV as Isaiah Martin of Caldwell, was pronounced dead at the scene by Burleson County Precinct Three Justice of the Peace Johnny Towslee.
Decker was taken by EMS to the hospital for further medical treatment, and was released the next day. Since then, he has been recovering at home.
The other suspect, who had a juvenile parole warrant, was taken to a detention facility in Montgomery County.
Because of a law enforcement officer being involved, the Texas Rangers were called in to investigate the shooting and later presented their findings to the Grand Jury.
Decker was placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation was ongoing.
Chief Barnes told the Burleson County Tribune that when Decker is ready to return, he will be restored to full active duty.
