CUBS OPEN SEASON WITH A 16-7 WIN OVER OAK RIDGE

The Brenham Cub Football Team opened the 2023 season last (Friday) night with a 16-7 win over Class 6A Oak Ridge.
The game started off as a defensive battle as neither team would give an inch. Brenham finally got on the scoreboard with 1:40 left in the second quarter. Jordan Harvey found Jakoby Dixon on a 15 yard touchdown pass. Rylee Davis added the extra point to make it 7-0 Cubs.
Oak Ridge came out to start the second half, and scored on a 38 yard touchdown run by Larry DeBose and an extra point by Angel Martinez to tie it at 7-7 with 10:10 left in the third quarter.
The Cubs would respond on the next drive as Harvey found Chris Guidry on a 74 yard touchdown pass. Davis missed the extra point. That made the score 13-7 Brenham with 8:08 left in the third quarter.
Davis would cap off the scoring with a 19 yard field goal. That increased the Cub lead to 16-7 with 2:27 left in the third quarter.
That would turn out to be the final as neither team would score in the fourth.
Harvey finished 13-23 passing for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Guidry was the leading receiver with four catches for 93 yard and a touchdown.
The Cubs struggled on the ground. Jakoby Dixon carried the ball eight times for 17 yards. Oakridge LB Justin Williams, who has committed to Georgia, was a thorn in their side all night. Brenham, as a team, carried the ball 28 times for only 19 yards.
Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, who has also committed to Georgia, had a big sack as well for Oak Ridge in the game.
Jabreon Moore led the Cub defense with two big interceptions, and also made several other key tackles in the game. His older brother, Cade Moore also had a big interception.
Brenham defenders Cole Whitfield, Juan Mata, Landon Shipley, and Doyle Brown had big games as well.
Next week, Brenham will go on the road to face Belton on Friday at 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm.
Most of the kids that play for Oak Ridge are already committed to D1 schools. Including 3-5 star players. The Cubs did an amazing job and we couldn’t be more proud of them!!
This was without a doubt the best defensive effort by the Cubs against a quality opponent in 10 years. Congratulations to the Cub staff and players. Looking forward to another great season!

I agree. Our kids were not as big or naturally gifted as many of the kids on Oak Ridge but they played harder, knew their job and did it time and time again.
