A Huntsville businessman and school board trustee is seeking the Republican nomination for Texas House District 12.

Trey Wharton has announced his candidacy in the March primary for state representative.  Wharton, who began his career in the banking industry before starting an insurance agency, has served on the Huntsville ISD board since 2015 and currently serves as board president.

Wharton says he is concerned about the direction of Texas and the country as a whole.  He says House District 12 deserves an engaged leader who will stand true to conservative values.

A graduate of Huntsville High School, Wharton attended Texas Christian University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration-Finance degree.  In 1991, he founded the Wharton Insurance Network.

Wharton has previously served as a board member and later chair of the Huntsville Walker County Chamber of Commerce.  He is currently on the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Community Board of Directors and has been a leader on various church committees, Huntsville boys baseball, the YMCA and other organizations.

Wharton says public schools are a major driving force for each community in the region, but he also understands the importance of accommodating learning opportunities for children.

Trey has been married to his wife, JoLynee, for over 33 years and has two adult children. They are members of the Northside Baptist Church in Huntsville.

Wharton is set to face incumbent Kyle Kacal in the March primary.  House District 12 covers Washington, Grimes, Madison, Robertson and Walker counties, as well as a portion of Brazos County.
