HIGH-SPEED CHASE NEAR LA GRANGE ENDS IN ARREST

A Georgetown man is in Fayette County custody after a high-speed chase late Wednesday night.

Stephen Greer
(Fayette Co. Jail)

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office reports that around 11:45 p.m., deputies were on routine patrol on Highway 71 westbound near Halstedt Road, east of La Grange, when whey spotted a gray Dodge Durango traveling over 90 mph in the eastbound lane.  The vehicle exited at East Old Highway 71, and deputies followed as it continued at high rates of speed.

According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle then left the roadway, cut through the ditch and crossed over Highway 71 through the median, heading back westbound.

Deputies caught up to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop along Highway 71 near Hatterman Lane.  The vehicle slammed on its brakes and came to an abrupt stop.  Deputies approached the driver’s window and began ordering him out of the vehicle, but he refused to get out.

After finally exiting, the sheriff’s office says he began actively resisting deputies as they tried to place him in handcuffs.  A brief struggle ensued, and the deputies were able to subdue the subject.

33-year-old Stephen Greer was arrested and initially charged with Reckless Driving and Resisting Arrest, Search or Transport.

During a vehicle inventory, a methamphetamine pipe was found in a locked glove box.  The key to the glove box was found hidden in Greer’s sock, under his foot.  Greer told deputies he knew about the pipe and was trying to hide it.  He was then charged with Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence.  He also admitted to trying to elude deputies.

During the arrest, the sheriff’s office says Greer began banging his head on the partition inside the patrol vehicle, resulting in an injury to his head.  EMS was called and tended to him at the scene.  He was then transported and booked at the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.
