BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NO PARKING ZONE ON WEST SIDE OF BLINN BOULEVARD

proposal to implement a no parking zone along the
west side of Blinn Boulevard.

The Brenham City Council today (Thursday) approved a request from Blinn College to put in a new no parking zone on campus.

The no parking zone will be on the west side of Blinn Boulevard, between College Avenue and West Fifth Street.  The area is across from the campus band hall, near a sharp curve by Prairie Lea Cemetery.

City of Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau said this should help to ease congestion and improve safety as Blinn College builds new off-street parking as part of its master plan.

Rau said the city will begin working with Blinn sometime after the start of the new year to erect signs and paint the curbs to reflect the change.

Also at today’s meeting, the council voted to grant a specific use permit to Calvary Baptist Church, allowing construction of an open-air pavilion behind the existing church building at 1100 Niebuhr Street.  The pavilion will be used for fellowship gatherings, picnic events, vacation bible school, National Night Out and similar activities.

Councilmember Dr. Paul LaRoche voted against approving the item, saying he was not in favor of having the pavilion in a residential area and cited the potential for noise issues.

In other business, councilmembers:

  • Granted a non-exclusive franchise to Only 1 Rentals, LLC to operate a roll-off container service inside Brenham city limits.
  • Approved budget amendments for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Fiscal Years.  Strategic Budget Officer Tim McRoberts said the 2022-23 amendments were to reflect the actual amount of the sales tax rebate to BK Stringer LTD and larger water fund budget expenditures due to higher chemical prices and volumes.  Both expenses are offset by increased revenues.  As for 2023-24, the amendment is for two projects, the MLK Parkway circuit upgrade pole changeout and South Market Street line upgrade, that were funded in the 2022-23 budget but were delayed.
  • Held executive session regarding Commonwealth Development, Inc. v. City of Brenham; Fair Housing Case No. 06-22-3294-8.  The case involves the proposed tax-credit housing development on Pecan Street that was rejected by the city council in February 2021.  No action was taken.
  • Met in executive session to discuss Aviators Plus, LLC v. City of Brenham; Cause No. 37896, 21st Judicial District Court, Washington County.  No action was taken.
